Seasonal changes ahead

In the interest of providing an accurate fishing report, I wanted to pass the information about what's going on in our paradise...For the past few weeks, the mahi bite has riddled the waters along the east coast of Florida as well as the lower Florida keys. Frustration sets in when you know the bite is "on" everywhere but your hometown fishing grounds! Recently, in the past few days, the mahi have officially shown up in islamorada...but not the typical schooling swarms, instead, small pods of bigger bulls and cows that seem to have been running somewhat independent of each other.

With that said, sometimes, I get excited during the change of season and all I can think about is catching a specific species upon its new arrival to the area. As a captain, it's easy to forget that it's not up to me and the customer is the boss when on the "Selfish!"

For this particular trip, I met my customer who introduced himself as Bill from Vermont. He knew me by reputation but that didn't stop him from vetting me in a thorough interview prior to booking his trip. He was a smart man to do so and I'd encourage anyone who's looking for a charter to do their homework! Bill was focused on one thing and one thing only...TUNA! Despite the recent mahi migration, he indicated that blackfin tuna was his target so after catching 7 1/2 blackfin tunas, the entire party was smiling! If you're wondering what that 1/2 of a fish was, welp we had a bit of a shark attack when reeling in the last tuna...haha!

Come make your vacation memory with Anglers Answer Sport Fishing in Islamorada, Florida Keys!

Is it Spring yet?

Sometimes I feel like we have been jockeying from left to right only to dodge the next "cold" front that this winter has brought us! This past week, we were able to find a small window to get out into the offshore bliss with some great customers!
In offshore fishing, if the captain is passionate about what he/she does, they typically take the time to find a niche' and/or educate themselves in a specific area that will set them apart from other charter captains. Having this area of specialty usually brings options to the table when weather or seasonal migration runs interference with the game plan that you thought was going to be put into play!
This past week, that concept came into play when the weather window began to close and the plan to shoot offshore had already been launched... With a slight side step, we were able to get off shore after flexing the time window a bit. Once offshore, we spent some time deep dropping and mustered up some golden tiles and black-bellied rose fish...by that time, the sun had passed over and the day began to calm and that only means one thing....ITS TUNA TIME!!! With the weather cooperating for the first time in as far as I can remember, we scooted over to a different depth and were able to slay some tuna that later served up as dock-side sushi for everyone!!!

Surprise us

While talking to some customers prior to their charter, I learned that these four college students who were on spring break had never fished before...but they were enthusiastic and ready to learn. During this conversation, I wanted to make an effort to ascertain their expectations so I could better structure our time together. Then they said the magic words, "you're the boss, surprise us!" It was like music to my ears, complete creative control on the à la cart of Pelagics! I couldn't have asked for a better day to work with, the best weather and most beautiful seas that I have seen in a dogs age…
We had an action-packed day and I did everything that I could possibly do to set the bar high for any future fishing experience that these guys may have! It would be easier to tell you about the species we didn't catch... From mahi and blackfin tuna offshore to deep dropping for scorpion fish, snowy grouper, tile fish and porgy...and then crushing a huge reef donkey sized amber jack for closure on the electric reels...we finished off the day with fishing on the reef for some snapper, these guys were exposed to a great time and I hope we were able to create a great memory for them!

Impromptu

Sometimes, there's nothing better than an impromptu fishing trip!
I made a new friend the other day...Jake came to me prior to his return to Long Island and explained how he had previously been on a charter while visiting Islamorada and was unhappy with the results. (Apparently, there may have been some misinterpretation or a breakdown in communication in the itinerary for the day so the trip kinda didn't go as expected- but all that is besides the point). Whatever the issue, I felt compelled to make every effort to correct Jake's perception of fishing in the keys before he left town. I didn't have a plan, nor did he have a trip with me booked, but I had just returned from my morning trip and had some time to kill before my next booking...so off we went! Jake and I winged it...we spent a couple hours hitting the patch reefs at a nearby location and were able to catch our limit of snapper, a few grouper that we released and some porgy! Jake only wanted to keep what he could eat, he was very happy and left town excited about fishing. Sometimes, it's the experience that matters the most…At Anglers Answer Sport Fishing, we pride ourselves in building relationships, not just putting customers on fish...

The tug is the drug

No matter where you go and Islamorada, you probably won't run into a charter fishing captain who will tell you that they can't wait for the next cold front to come through! Despite the nasty wins, Angler's Answer Sportfishing has been consistently able to put meat on the deck and limit out on snapper while our last trip yielded 10 grouper between 15 and 20 inches. Even though they are out of season and we were not harvesting, "the tug is the drug," so they say and that makes for some very happy customers!

March Madness

Coming out of a sloppy February where cold fronts seem to be more often than not, March brings a whole new outlook of great fishing times!

March 1st is typically what most fishermen in the Florida Keys gauge the moving target that marks the beginning of dolphin (fish) season...well, that proves to be an accurate measurement of calendar as Anglers Answer Sport Fishing boarded its first Mahi of the season aboard the "Selfish"

The snap attack on the reef and patches has been stellar and loaded with a variety of snapper, grouper, porgy & hogfish! To book your next adventure on the rod, call Anglers Answer Sport Fishing NOW! 239-877-7875

February Fishing Report

February with crazy wind and frequent cold fronts… For some, that may discourage them due to the perception of rough seas...Not for anglers answer sportfishing!
And Islamorada, reading the wind is the best way to predict the condition of the water. We are usually able to finish most when do you days and lately the patch reefs have been on fire!!! From porgies to mutton snapper and yellowtail snapper, it's difficult to not be catching in a frenzy while fishing the patches!

This post is from a satisfied customer

Capt. Kevin delivered "Catching", not just "Fishing"!

Capt. Kevin Hennings delivered a great experience for my group when we booked with him for a half-day charter out of World Wide Sportsman in Islamorada, FL (mm 81.5 bayside).

We met at the dock at 7:30 am, and he was ready to go right away. As we left the dock he queried us about what kind of fishing we wanted to do (fish to eat, sportfishing, species specific, or just wanted to catch and release lots of fish). We wanted to catch a lot, maybe a few to eat - and he had the spot.

We spent the morning catching, keeping, releasing, catching more, releasing more, keeping some, repeat, repeat. The four of us on board didn't stop casting and catching until we pulled the anchor up and returned back to the marina.

I would recommend Capt. Kevin for both experienced anglers, and first-timers. If I'd had my kids on this trip, they would have had a blast as well.

"Hell Week"

In the Florida keys, the week between Christmas and New Year's Eve is commonly referred to as "Hell Week" for many reasons...the population in tourism is magnified, to say the least, and the fishing is INSANE, no matter the species targeted!

To wrap up 2015, the most incredible family visited Anglers Answer Sport Fishing for a full day of the best fishing. We ended the day after limiting out on Spanish mackerel, mangrove snapper, yellow tail snapper and trout! It couldn't have been a better ending to a great year! I have to say, I think I have the best customers in the world!

December Report

Sorry for delay in posting but mixing in a holiday season with catching monsters proved to be a bit hectic!

Over the past couple weeks, we have covered fishing grounds from back country tarpon and King fishing in Florida Bay, all the way to wahoo fishing in Cay Sal! This crazy range of fishing only came after our Suzuki sponsorship outfitted us with 2016 twin 300hp 4 strokes and an added yeti 420 to keep our catch chilled for the cookin'!

Sometimes to read lengthy articles about multiple fishing trips could get boring...but I assure you, the month of December has been anything but! As an informational note, right now is a bit windy and a little rough on the chop but that is the toll to the gateway of some of the best fishing of the year! In one full day trip; a sailfish, mahi, wahoo, blackfin tuna, king mackerel and yellow tail snapper were landed on the "Selfish"...that, in comparison to the recent Cay Sal trip, falls short! If you are ever able to fish Cay Sal, I have one piece of advice: Do it!

In 2500' of water, the mahi have shoulders. High speed trolling for wahoo is beneficial at every depth, running from 70' to 1700' and the bigger the drop, the faster the troll! As if that wasn't exciting enough, there's always a deep drop reel waiting to be deployed...some of the best deep dropping in the world is in these waters and you can't leave without setting up for a few drops to put meat on the deck, if there's any room left!

Anglers Answer Sport Fishing is excited for the new year and look forward to spreading crazy fun to all of our customers...For you next adventure on the reel, contact us to make your next fishing memory!

FISHING OUTSIDE THE BOX!

With the season and fishery in Islamorada changing rapidly, there are some things to remember if you're going to be expecting a good catch in the Florida Keys… every fish in the water has a tail and just because you're familiar with the pelagic, that doesn't mean that particular species will limit itself to where you normally find it!

This past week, fishing has been affected by a series of anomalies. To that extent, in one charter trip, I've caught tuna in 700' of water and decent 'lifter' dolphin in as shallow as 50' of water, just adjacent to yellow tail! While "live chumming," you can expect just about anything...

Besides the season or the time of year, there are other factors to take in to consideration... How much and what kind of bait is available and is being used, also whether live, dead or artificial bait, as well as, water temperatures and locations that are being fished. These are a few details that you will want to pay attention to if you expect to be cleaning fish at the end of the day!

For a detailed education, having a successful and great time bending the rod, book your next charter with Anglers Answer Sport Fishing! www.sportfishing.fish
